ANDRÉ ROMÃO’s works usually develop from his research into a specific historical or literary situation. He expands its levels of meaning by working on the widest possible spectrum of sources and references and re-assembling them in a fresh way in the context of his work. Thus Romão’s works are always collages – in the direct or figurative sense. Romão’s preferred themes range from ethics to aesthetics, politics to poetry, and history-writing to myth, but a recurrent interest is motifs from antiquity.

His latest work The Vertical Stage offers a fresh way of reading authentic events that took place in

Mexico City – both the murder of peaceful demonstrators by the Bataillon Olímpia in October 1968, which became known as the “Night of Tlatelolco”, and the Olympic Summer Games that were realised according to plan shortly afterwards.

Romão develops this alternative interpretation by combining documentary material of the Mexican events with cleverly chosen elements from Homer’s Iliad and Antonin Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty and leading attention away from the historic reporting to the human aspect; to the exemplary individual in the collective process of history. Thus, the Olympic Games are interpreted in the sense of a collective, symbolic but unconscious act of performance: an historical “re-enactment”, a drama, acting out a specific event in the nature of a format for the stage.
The Vertical Stage encompasses texts, a series of collages, a sculpture and a slide projection.

A catalogue will be appearing for the exhibition (German/English/Portuguese) with texts by Ellen Blumenstein and André Romão.

‘Have a Look! Have a Look!’ screams the woman that sells fruits and vegetables in a stall right in front of FormContent’s window on Ridley Road market. Her voice attracts the passer-by becoming a physical presence to distinguish one stall from the others.

Similarly HaVE A LoOk! HAve a LOok! will be a physical and mental gathering of sounds, words and objects tackling the dematerialization of art pieces into aural manifestations. Ranging from live events, pre-recorded contributions and curated sessions, the project explores the existing relationship between the physicality of an object and the possibility of its oral transmission.

Through a weekly update of online audio streaming, FormContent will map and experiment with the parameters of an exhibition as a recorded medium. At the same time the space will be open to be used by the participants as a listening room, a compendium for the online contributions or as an impromptu collection of objects investigating further the relationship between the presence of a work and its narration.

Guests working on the threshold of art, music and writing have been developing content that will feed the online streaming and could also create a visual layer to the exhibition space available at FormContent through events, performances or temporary sets.

The project will manifest itself weekly from May 7th to July 11th 2010 through various interventions confusingly constructing an exhibition existing, through several constituents, in different formats and in different place.

Over 35 international contributors will enrich to the project with very diversified ideas that will be declined in a Babel of noise, voices, sounds and stories at FormContent.

As part of the Karlin open studio project, Futura resident Emily Verla Bovino, in collaboration with Jiří Skála and Markéta Vinglerová, has invited artist Pedro Neves Marques to present three works in the context of a staged discussion-room at etc galerie. The initiative explores the potential of the artist residency as locus for dynamic exchange and forum for collaborative brainstorming around challenging concepts and ideas. The project is also an inquiry into the figure of the artist-as-researcher and looks to deliberate upon the potential of recent shifts regarding the role of the artist in both art-making and art administration. Pedro Neves Marques and Emily Verla Bovino met in residence in 2009 at the Fondazione Antonio Ratti Advanced Course for the Visual Arts with visiting professor Walid Raad.


One sees. As much as anyone else, one has a vision: hallucinations of possibilities past, present and future. Visions in the mind and in collaboration with History. Folds-unfolds in things given. Shifts. Voices. A misanthrope, but inevitably visions must become proposals; and a community of individuals formed.

During three days a set will be staged for three proposals to be shared. Eminently rhetorical, each proposal focuses on specific lives and existential events, with resonances both aesthetic and ethic. Presented before and elsewhere, these three proposals are brought together at etc galerie for the first time to resonate with each other in a frame for discussion, reflection and relation.

Topics of discussion transversal and to pursue among the three days will be the relationships of anonymity to exemplarity, of exemplarity to life and of life to the invisibility of performance; the (un)consciousness of being in the creative act - is it art? - and its consequences on spectatorship; is there a contemporary typology of art, and if so what is its relation to visibility and nomenclature? Is everyone an artist - seriously? - and if we say yes, is the question how or when?

The proposals will be made at an appointed hour on each day, with group discussion ensuing afterwards or in the meantime. Attendance on all three days is preferred.


15 April, Thursday, 18h: The Escape Route's Design
The Escape Route’s Design: Assessment of the impact of current Aesthetics on History, comparative reading of an example close to the city of Berlin (written in collaboration with Mariana Silva) stages a dialogue between the incomplete projects in Ilya Kabakov’s installational works and the series of attempts at crossing the Berlin Wall from East to West from the 1960s to 1989. Through this dialogue the supposition of an already made realization of Ilya Kabakov's proposals, most specifically in ‘The Palace of Projects’, by way of the historical events occurred at the Berlin Wall is advanced. Given the aesthetic revision of these historical events, it is proposed the consideration of a ready-made historical utopia, as well as, through a temporal synapses between art and life, the supposition of a invisible revolution already given in the past. A discussion room will be set at ect.galerie and the proposal read in common with the presence of the artist. Drinks will be served. 16 April, Friday, 18h: The Wandering Chief (1880-1891)
The Wandering Chief (1880-1891) takes as case study the process of abandonment of literature by Arthur Rimbaud and his subsequent life as merchant in the Horn of Africa, Harar and Aden between 1880-1891. Taking as starting point biographer Charles Nicholl's affirmation of Rimbaud's African life as his masterpiece the proposal is made in the vertigo of its understanding as art and its ethico-aesthetical consequences. A performance for two people will take place starting from 18h, followed afterwards by discussion in common mediated by the artist. Drinks will be served.

17 April, Saturday, 18h: The Tigris Expedition (1978)
The Tigris Expedition (1978) takes at its core the Tigris Expedition lead by anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl in 1978. The expedition had as main purpose the construction of a reed ship according to Sumerian models dating from 5000 years ago and its navigation through the Persian Gulf and Indic Ocean in search of ancient commercial routes between Sumer, the Hindus Valley and Egypt. After five months of voyage and on not being allowed to follow further into the Red Sea due to conflicts in the Horn of Africa, the expedition met its end on the shores of Djibouti by way of burning the ship as protest against the conflicts and international interests in the region. A performative reading will be take place starting from 18h, followed afterwards by discussion in common mediated by the artist. Drinks will be served.

Baginski Galeria/Projectos is proud to present its participation in Arco, Madrid 2010, with a Solo Project by André Romão (Lisbon 1984), curated by Adriano Pedrosa.

André Romão’s work explores both the overlapping of and the flaws and absences of sense in historical, literary and artistic episodes. Such exploration has as a goal the opening up of a broad field of meaning, a precarious ground between ethics and aesthetics, politics and poetics, historiography and mysticism. The artist acts through a continuous research on the human aspects that can be found in cultural production and, more specifically, in the inevitability of transition within historical cycles.

The present work entitled “Everything lasts forever: Persian War / War of Independence” draws its references from the two historical episodes present in the title, separated almost 2400 years in time, and the two literary works that have settled the way we understand such periods, respectively Aeschylus’ The Persians and Hölderlin’s Hyperion.

Both references point towards periods of change, and their inherent flaws, overlappings, energy and fear of change, which constitute the core of the works specifically developed for and now being presented. It is history’s repetitions and cycles that constitute the core of the present work.

While works such as “Model for a rhetoric sculpture”, present a re-reading on the literary and historical fonts, others as “Delphi” and the minimalist-like structure of “Sculpture” try to settle a common ground for the trans-temporal nature of events with its reference to Greece’s conceptual and mythological centre as a subjected the battleground. Finally the work “everything last Forever (bones)” offers a more poetical but also discursive reading with its approach to cycles.

His last show, “The winter of (our) discontent” at Kunsthalle Lissabon comes in line with a series of previous projects (“Nothing lasts forever”, Galeria Pedro Cera, Lisbon and “Everything lasts forever”, Pavilhão Branco, City Museum, Lisbon), that are part of a work cycle entitled “The perfect state” and through which Romão researches the individual’s position in a larger human community (historical, political, social, emotional) and towards the inevitable passing of time.

André Romão was born in Lisbon in 1984 and currently lives and works in Berlin. Having studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon, he has currently a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s fellowship as a resident artist at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, in Berlin. A Kunsthalle Lissabon apresenta a primeira exposição individual de André Romão, O Inverno do (nosso) descontentamento. A prática do artista explora não apenas as sobreposições, mas também as falhas e ausências de sentido na contiguidade entre referências e episódios históricos, literários e artísticos. Tal exploração tem como objectivo a abertura de um campo de significado lato, um terreno movediço entre ética e estética, politica e poética, historiografia e misticismo. Romão efectua uma pesquisa contínua sobre o que se pode desocultar de terrivelmente humano na produção cultural, na inevitabilidade das transições na ciclicidade histórica e permanência de conceitos.

O titulo da exposição surge por duas vias; por uma lado, “inverno do descontentamento”, nome genérico de um período de greves e contestação social em Inglaterra durante a década de setenta do séc XX; por outro, “ò inverno do nosso descontentamento, convertido agora em glorioso verão...”, uma famosa citação da peça Ricardo III de Shakespeare, que dá conta da mudança de fortuna para a casa de York. As duas referências apontam para períodos de mudança, e são esses momento de passagem, com as sua falhas, sobreposições, energia e medo de transição, que se pode dizer que constituem o cerne dos trabalhos agora apresentados.

O projecto para a Kunsthalle Lissabon surge no seguimento de projectos anteriores (“Nada dura para sempre”, Galeria Pedro Cera, Lisboa e “Tudo dura para sempre”, Pavilhão Branco, Museu da Cidade, Lisboa) que podem ser considerados como constitutivos de um ciclo de trabalho genericamente intitulado “O Estado perfeito”, no qual Romão investiga o posicionamento do indivíduo na comunidade humana (histórica, política, social, emocional) e no confronto com o inevitável decorrer do tempo.

André Romão nasceu em Lisboa em 1984 e vive actualmente em Berlim. Licenciado em Design de Comunicação pela Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa é actualmente bolseiro da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian na Künstlerhaus Bethanien em Berlim. Tendo iniciado a sua actividade expositiva em meados dos anos 2000, destaca-se a sua participação nas seguintes exposições: O Sol morre cedo, Pavilhão Branco - Museu da Cidade, 2009; Democracia entre Tiranos, Galeria Pedro Cera, 2009; JENSEITS, EnBlanco, Berlim, 2009; Ocorrência, Galeria Baginski, 2008; Luoghi per Eroi, Vianuova-Arte Contemporanea, Florença, 2008 e A river ain’t too much to love, Spike Island, Bristol, 2008. Em 2007 venceu o Prémio EDP Novos Artistas. É representado pela Galeria Baginski, Lisboa.

The title of the exhibition thus appears through two different ways: on one side, “winter of discontent” is the generic name given to a period in United Kingdom's recent history, the seventies, marked by several strikes and social upheavel; on the other side, “Now is the winter of our discontent | Made glorious summer by this sun of York”, the famous opening lines of Shakespeare's Richard III, describing the changes happening to the House of York. Both references point towards periods of change, and their inherent flaws, overlappings, energy and fear of change, which constitute the core of the works specifically developed for and now being presented in Kunsthalle Lissabon.
